Graduate Student Research Awards for CSSS 2010

The Computational Social Science Society 2010 planning committee is pleased to announce that at this year 's CSSS annual conference, the work of two student-led papers will be selected for special recognition based on their potential to advance computational social science. Awards will be given for the best working models or completed ABM-based investigations (e.g., docking experiments). The following criteria must be met for award consideration: A student must be the first or only author. The work should reflect, primarily, the student 's efforts. Working models can be presented at the conference, or experimental work is demonstrably relevant to the goals of CSSS. The conference submission is sufficiently detailed to allow adequate committee evaluation. Awardees will present their work on Saturday November 6, at the conference luncheon. Presentations will consist of a 20 minute talk (and demonstration if applicable) followed by 10 minutes for questions. Each award winner will receive a certificate signifying this honor plus $100.00. Read more here.

SIRU incorporated into an expanded SATSU

Science and Technology Studies Unit (SATSU) at University of York has in May 2010 joined forces with the Social Informatics Research Unit (SIRU - also based in the Department) because of their growing shared interests and research projects, making for a much larger critical mass of researchers at York working on new technologies, science and culture. SATSU is an internationally recognised social science research centre exploring the dynamics, practices, and possibilities of contemporary science and technology. Its principal focus is on the biosciences, health, digital media and social networking including new forms of democratic governance, and the broader regulatory universe within which these are found. Our approach is to provide both theoretical and empirically-grounded critical analyses of these fields, and to undertake interdisciplinary and policy-relevant research informed by both conventional and novel methodological techniques.
Call for Papers: SocInfo 2010

Social Informatics is an area of informatics that studies how information systems can realize social goals, apply social concepts, and become sources of information relevant for social sciences and for analysis of social phenomena (such as political or marketing analysis). The International Conference on Social Informatics aims to become an interdisciplinary venue for researchers from informatics and the social sciences. The goal is to create an opportunity for the dissemination of knowledge between the two communities, as well as to enable mutual critical discussion of current research. The conference solicits interdisciplinary papers on methods from the social sciences in the study of information systems, applying information technology in the study of social phenomena, or applying social concepts in the design of information systems. Each paper will be reviewed by at least one expert in the domain of social sciences. The modeling and simulation of complex social phenomena, including Web2.0 applications, using well-established models such as social networks, is of particular interest to SocInfo’2010. Applications of social concepts in concrete information systems such as web enterprises or services, games, multi-agent systems, e-commerce (including trust management and reputation systems) environments for support of teamwork, argumentation and debate, or creative work, will be of interest. The extensions of established knowledge in recommendation systems, collaborative applications (including collaborative filtering and tagging), distributed AI or Multi-agent systems for the purpose of incorporating social mechanisms may be a contribution to the conference. Submission deadline: June 7th, 2010. Read more here.
