The Institute of Social Informatics and Technological Innovations (ISITI), and its affiliated Centre of Excellence for Rural Informatics (CoERI) has conducted research employing a people-centred (participatory), holistic, and multidisciplinary approach in the deployment of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) to the remote and rural communities in Malaysia since 1999. This approach has been refined based on lessons learnt from the pilot eBario project, and has been replicated to 4 other sites in East Malaysia (Malaysian Borneo), as well as 4 sites in West Malaysia. In addition to achieving an empowered and trained community, as well as opportunities enabled by ICTs to improve their livelihood, the institute has developed expertise in many niche areas such as Rural Informatics, Green Technologies, ICT Development (ICTD) and ICT for Development (ICT4D).
